The alphabet has 26 letters. Music has 12 notes. This game puts one on top of the other — every letter wears a note, every note wears a color, and singing the ABCs becomes composing. Here’s the connection.
The ABC song is already a music lesson. Most children learn the alphabet by singing it — the traditional ABC song is usually the very first melody a child memorizes, borrowed from Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Long before school calls it music, kids are using melody to remember, and rhythm to keep the letters in order. This game just makes that hidden lesson visible.
Letters and notes play the same trick. Twenty-six letters are enough to spell every word ever written. Twelve notes are enough to build nearly every song ever sung. Both are small alphabets that combine into endless possibilities — reading and music are the same kind of magic: a handful of symbols, reused and rearranged, without end.
Why only 12 notes for 26 letters? The same reason a long word repeats letters: notes are meant to be reused. In the traditional ABC song, the 26 letters share just six different notes — L, M, N, and O all sing the very same one. So there’s no need to match letters and notes one-to-one; sharing notes between letters is exactly what melody-making is. Which letters share? That’s the choice that makes each song different — and it’s the whole game.
Use as few or as many notes as you like. A child’s song doesn’t need all twelve colors — and it doesn’t need to stick to six, either. A lovely melody can be painted with just 4 or 5 pitches, or reach for 8, 10, or all 12. Encourage kids to choose the notes they hear in their own tune: a small palette makes a song easy to sing, a big palette makes it adventurous. Both are real composing.
Every note has a true color. The twelve colors are the Harken Music System palette, where each of the twelve notes always keeps its own color. Home base — the tonic, green, the note the song starts and ends on — is where the letter A begins. Painting a letter or isn’t decoration: the child is literally choosing which pitch that letter will sing.
The rhythm stays, the melody changes. Every song a child paints keeps the familiar ABC-song rhythm — the quick L-M-N-O run, the long note on G — so everything they make still scans and sings as the alphabet. What changes is the melody. That’s a real music-theory idea in miniature: rhythm and pitch are separate ingredients, and you can change one while keeping the other. In a real sense the rhythm is the song: keep it, and any coat of colors still sounds like the ABCs — the same tune, in different colors.
Know the rhythm, and you can compose to it. Here is the scaffold every painted song rides on, phrase by phrase. A B C D E F step along evenly, and G holds twice as long. H I J K keep that steady walk, L-M-N-O dash by twice as fast — four quick notes in the time of two — and P holds. Then two matching phrases: Q R step and S holds; T U step and V holds. W sings three little notes all by itself (dou-ble-u!), X holds, Y-and-Z finish the walk, and the song bows on one long chord — the home note and its octave ringing together. Long notes are resting spots; the quick runs are the fun. A melody that rises toward the held notes and comes home at the end will always sing well on this frame.
For teachers — the song in Harken notation. Numbers are pitches counted up from home (0 = tonic); letters are lengths (q quarter, e eighth, s sixteenth, w whole; plain notes are eighths). The traditional song reads:

When a child repaints the letters, only the numbers change — the lengths, the barlines, and the final chord stay exactly as written. Swap in your own numbers and you’ve notated their song.
