Every clock number is a color and a musical note — the twelve of them are the chromatic clock, with 12 as green “home.” The three hands sing the notes they point to: the hour low, the minute in the middle, the seconds high and soft. Kids learn to tell time and soak up all twelve tones at once.
A clock face has twelve hours. Music has twelve notes. This clock puts them on top of each other — every number is also a note, and every note has a color. Here’s the connection.
Twelve, twice over. Nearly all the music you hear is built from twelve notes — the twelve equal steps of the chromatic scale, a system called 12-tone equal temperament (12-TET). A clock is built from twelve hours. Same twelve, two different worlds, and they line up more deeply than by accident.
Around the face is up the scale. Start at 12 and walk clockwise: 12 → 1 → 2 → 3… Each step is one semitone, the smallest move in music — the jump from any piano key to the one right beside it. Twelve steps carry you all the way around and back to 12, one full octave higher. One trip around the clock is one climb up the scale.
12 is home. The green 12 at the top is the tonic — home base, the note every other note is heard in relation to (here it’s C). On a clock, 12 is where the day turns over from morning to afternoon. In music, home is where a melody feels finished. It’s the same idea: the point everything returns to. That’s why a soft home note keeps sounding in the bass under every chime — home is always there, even when no hand is pointing at it.
6 o’clock is the opposite of home. Look straight across from 12 to 6. In time, 6:00 is as far from 12:00 as you can get. In music, the note at 6 — the tritone — is the most distant, most restless note from home, the one that most wants to fall back to it. The poles of the clock face are the poles of the harmony.
The colors are real. Light is a wave, just like sound — only unimaginably faster. And here's the surprise: the whole rainbow, from deepest red to deepest violet, spans almost exactly one octave of light. Violet light vibrates about twice as fast as red light — the very same "twice as fast" that takes a note up one octave. Nature gave our eyes one octave to see, built on the same interval music is built on.
So every note has a true color. Take any note and double its speed forty times — forty octaves up — and it lands inside the rainbow as a color you can see. C lands on green, and that's why home wears green. Climb the scale and you climb the rainbow:
Why the bottom of the clock is darkest. A rainbow is a stripe with two ends, but notes travel in a circle — so the wheel closes through the deep purples and maroons your eye sees where red and violet meet. Those edge-of-the-rainbow colors are the dimmest ones, and they land right at the bottom of the clock: brightest at 12, darkest at 6. The farther a note is from home, the darker its color. So these twelve colors aren't decoration — each number wears the actual color of its own note's light, forty octaves up.
Why twelve, in both? Twelve divides evenly into halves, thirds, quarters, and sixths — more clean splits than any smaller number. That’s why clocks use it (“half past,” “quarter to”), and it’s why music uses it too: those same even splits give the whole-tone scale, the augmented and diminished chords, and the tritone. A shape you can draw on the clock face is a chord you can hear.
Minutes and seconds count in twelves too. Sixty is just twelve groups of five. The minute hand sweeps the very same twelve notes as the hours, five times finer; the second hand, finer still. Every hand is singing its way around the same twelve-note wheel, each at its own speed.
Morning and afternoon sound alike. 2:00 in the afternoon points to the same spot — and sounds the same note — as 2:00 in the morning, because notes, like clocks, run in circles: past twelve you’re back to the start, only higher or later. That’s the octave. The sun and moon tell you which is which; the music doesn’t need to.
So you can tell time with your ears as well as your eyes — and pick up the language of music just by watching the clock go round.
